Why We Are Not Who We Think We Are

Updated: Mar 9

Most of us spend our lives identifying with roles.

  • Our job.

  • Our achievements.

  • What other people think of us.

But beneath those roles there is something quieter, simply the awareness experiencing life. Understanding this can bring surprising freedom.

Step 1: Notice the Stories You Carry

We all carry stories about who we believe we are.

“I’m not good at this.”

“I must prove myself.”

“This is just the way I am.”

But these are often just ideas we’ve repeated long enough to believe.

Step 2: Observe Your Thoughts

Take a moment to watch your thoughts throughout the day. You may notice they constantly come and go. If you can observe a thought, then it cannot truly define who you are.

This simple observation creates space.

Step 3: Let Identity Become Lighter

When we stop clinging so tightly to labels and expectations, life begins to feel less heavy. You don’t have to carry every story the mind creates.

Sometimes clarity comes from loosening our grip.

Conclusion

You are not just the roles you play or the thoughts that appear in your mind.

When we step back and observe life more gently, we often discover a deeper sense of ease.
